When the news dropped in late 2021 that Marc Jacobs would stop producing its beauty line, I, along with many other fans, scrambled to stock up. For a fashion label’s offshoot beauty brand, the products really had no right to be as good as they were. The Fineliner gel eyeliner was a particular favorite of mine — it had a smooth, velvety texture that glided across my eyelids and stayed sharp and crisp for hours. I still wistfully think of it every now and then.

For years there have been whispers of a comeback, but no rumors ever panned out — until now. Marc Jacobs Beauty officially relaunched on June 1 with an initial collection of seven product categories: eyeliner, mascara, bronzer, lipstick, eyeshadow, highlighter gel, and blush sticks. The original Marc Jacobs Beauty was a partnership with beauty incubator Kendo Brands; this new iteration is under beauty conglomerate Coty, which means it’s safe to assume the formulations have been tweaked, if not reimagined entirely. So I tested all the new products to see how they match up to my old favorites.
