Chief Justice condemns disruptive behaviour at Durban Labour Court.
The office of the Chief Justice has strongly condemned an incident of disruptive behaviour that unfolded at the Labour Court in Durban on Wednesday, describing the conduct as unacceptable and a threat to the dignity and integrity of the judicial system.
According to a statement issued by the office of the Chief Justice, a member of the public caused a disturbance inside the courtroom by directing abusive and inappropriate language at court staff and the presiding judge. The individual also allegedly physically manhandled a court interpreter during the incident.
The office further revealed that the same individual subsequently circulated a video on social media that it says undermines the dignity and reputation of a court staff member. The judiciary described the dissemination of the video as deplorable and said it constituted a serious breach of the standards of respect expected towards court officials.
The incident has raised concerns about conduct within court premises, with the office of the Chief Justice reiterating that violence, intimidation, abuse and disorderly behaviour have no place in the country's courts. It stressed that such actions undermine the integrity of the judiciary, court officials and all those who rely on the courts for the administration of justice.
