Beirut, June 4 (EFE).- A Serbian member of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed and two Spanish peacekeepers were lightly injured after mortar rounds struck their position in southern Lebanon, the mission said on Thursday.
The Serbian peacekeeper sustained critical injuries in the overnight attack near Marjayoun, in southeastern Lebanon, and was transferred to a hospital in Beirut, where he later died, according to a UNIFIL statement.
The two injured peacekeepers, both Spanish nationals, suffered minor injuries caused by the impact of the projectiles and are receiving treatment at a UNIFIL base, Spanish Defense Ministry sources confirmed to EFE.
UNIFIL has launched an investigation into the incident.
«A UNIFIL peacekeeper died early this morning from critical injuries sustained when mortar shells struck his position near Marjayoun, southeastern Lebanon,» the mission said.
