Lebanon: Another peacekeeper dies in new attack
He has been identified as Sergeant Milovan Jovanivić. UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement condemning the killing, expressing his deepest condolences to all who knew and worked with the deceased ‘blue helmet’.Two other peacekeepers also sustained injuries in the incident and are receiving medical treatment at a UNIFIL facility.The force said that an investigation is underway “to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to this tragic incident…The violence must end.”It is not clear where the shelling originated, but the development comes amid intensifying exchanges of fire between the Israeli military in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah fighters who are not part of Lebanese army.“Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law and of Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes,” UNIFIL stressed.Accountability essential“All attacks on peacekeepers must be promptly investigated, and those responsible must be effectively prosecuted and held accountable,” said UN chief Guterres.The Secretary-General also urged all combatants to respect the cessation of hostilities announced on 16 April, adding that the UN “is committed to supporting diplomatic efforts towards an extension of the cessation of hostilities and the full implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 (2006).”The attack came hours ahead of a US-announced ceasefire renewal agreement between Lebanon and Israel on Wednesday, which the leaders of Hezbollah's military wing reportedly rejected, calling it “futile”.The UN chief welcomed the ceasefire deal struck in Washington, urging all parties to respect the agreement and comply with international law.Mr. Guterres called on Hezbollah to respect the Lebanese Government's authority and its exclusive control over weapons, and pressed Israel to withdraw fully from north of the Blue Line of separation.
