Eastern Slovakia is becoming a costlier study destination.
While most Slovaks regard domestic universities as being of lower quality than those abroad, thousands of international students continue to enrol at Slovak institutions. Their tuition fees now account for a significant share of university budgets, particularly in eastern Slovakia.
Which university has almost half of its student body made up of foreign nationals? And which institution paid €1.4 million last year to recruitment agencies for bringing in international students?
According to the Education Ministry, the Technical University of Košice (TUKE) received €93.99 million from the state budget for 2026.
Annual tuition fees for programmes taught in a language other than Slovak are set at €5,000 for bachelor’s degrees across all faculties, €6,000 for master’s programmes and €7,000 for doctoral studies.
