The vice-president is expected to join Renew Europe after months of tensions with Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein
Pina Picierno, vice-president of the European Parliament, has announced that she is leaving both Italy’s Democratic Party, and the Socialists and Democrats group.
Her move comes as little surprise to many within the socialist family, as Picierno, one of the Parliament’s most outspoken supporters of Ukraine, has increasingly clashed with Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein over foreign policy, as well as the party’s positions on security and defence.
Picierno is now in contact with the leadership of Renew Europe, Euractiv’s newsletter Rapporteur earlier reported, and is expected to follow the path of Elisabetta Gualmini, who left the Italian socialist delegation to join Renew last month.
