European Parliament Vice-President Pina Picierno is pushing back against pressure to stand down from her post in the assembly’s powerful ‘bureau’ after she announced her departure from the Socialists.
“European Parliament rules do not provide for the removal of members of the Bureau from office in the event that they join a different political group,” Picierno’s staff told Euractiv.
The comments come in response to Socialist calls for her to relinquish the vice-presidency after she announced plans to leave the party and end her affiliation with the centre-left S&D group in the Parliament.
