UK member of parliament Jess Asato has sued xAI, the AI unit of aerospace firm SpaceX, in London’s High Court in a case that could test whether companies can be held liable for content produced by their chatbots.

Asato said xAI’s Grok tool created fake sexualised images of her without her consent in January, after she criticised the company.

At the time, Grok was producing large numbers of sexualised images, notably of women and children, prompting investigations in a number of jurisdictions, including the UK and the EU.

Legal challenge

Asato’s claim argues xAI violated laws around data protection and the misuse of private information by allowing the images to be generated.
