The government is drawing cautious encouragement from the first opinion polls conducted after the announcement of new political parties, with officials focusing on whether emerging political formations are eroding support for the ruling New Democracy party.
According to government assessments, the party associated with former prime minister Alexis Tsipras has not reduced ND’s support and may instead be reinforcing party unity among voters who backed the conservatives in 2019 and 2023.
A government source said Tsipras’ return revives memories that “function as a rallying factor” for parts of the electorate.
Maria Karystianou appears to attract some ND voters, though officials consider those inflows limited. Government officials are also encouraged by the large gap separating ND from the second-place party in current polling.
However, they view the 12% share of undecided voters as a major challenge, given its potential impact on the party’s final electoral result.
