A 3-year-old girl remained in critical condition Thursday after being run over by a car in a Roma settlement in western Attica, in an incident that has renewed concerns over child welfare in the area.

The girl was rushed to the intensive care unit of the capital’s Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital after suffering severe injuries.

Police said the child was behind a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old man when he reversed, apparently unaware of her presence, and struck her.

The incident took place at a Roma settlement in the area of Zefyri

Authorities are searching for the girl’s parents as part of an investigation into possible child neglect. According to state broadcaster ERT, no family members have asked after the child since the accident took place on Wednesday evening.
