A 12-year-old boy is in intensive care after being seriously injured while riding an electric scooter in a collision with a car in Paiania, southeast of Athens.

Police said the child was riding the scooter Saturday when he failed to stop at a STOP sign at an intersection and collided with a passing vehicle. He was not wearing a helmet and, according to initial reports, may have been using a mobile phone while riding.

He was taken to the Children’s Hospital Agia Sophia, where he is being treated in the intensive care unit. Doctors said his condition is stable and he is not in immediate danger.

The incident comes amid a rise in electric scooter-related injuries in Greece. Health data show more than 80 cases involving children in May alone, while hospitals are also treating increasing numbers of injured adult riders.

Health and traffic authorities have expressed concern over the trend, urging stricter compliance with road safety rules and the consistent use of protective equipment, especially among minors.
