The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has issued a warning to members of the public against participating in a proposed “Walk for Peace” scheduled to take place in Port of Spain today, saying no authorisation has been granted for the event under the current State of Emergency regulations. In a statement on Wednesday, the TTPS said it was aware of a flyer circulating on social media promoting the event, which was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.While expressing support for legitimate initiatives aimed at promoting peace, reducing violence and encouraging community engagement, the police stressed that all public gatherings, marches, processions and assemblies remain subject to strict legal requirements and security assessments during the State of Emergency.“At this time, no authorisation has been granted for any public march or procession associated with this event,” the TTPS stated. The police warned that any attempt to organise or participate in an unauthorised march along public roadways could constitute a breach of the laws and regulations currently in force. The TTPS said it was particularly concerned about the proposed assembly point on Piccadilly Street, which it described as presenting significant public safety and traffic management challenges.Police also cited concerns about the potential for large, uncoordinated gatherings that could create risks for participants, motorists, businesses and the wider public.“The current State of Emergency environment requires law enforcement to maintain heightened vigilance and exercise appropriate control measures in the interest of public safety and national security,” the statement said. The TTPS urged members of the public to refrain from participating in any unauthorised march or road procession and to comply promptly with all lawful instructions issued by police officers. It also encouraged individuals and organisations wishing to promote advocacy, community engagement or peace-building initiatives to utilise lawful and approved channels. The police service said it remained committed to working with community groups, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, but advised that any organisation seeking to host a public event should engage the relevant authorities and obtain the necessary approvals before proceeding. The TTPS said officers would continue to monitor the situation and would take “all lawful, proportionate and necessary action” to maintain public order, protect life and property, and safeguard national security.“Public safety remains our highest priority,” the statement added.
