Every year on June 1, Kenya celebrates Madaraka Day, marking the day the country attained internal self-rule from the British colonial government in 1963. Full independence came on December 12, 1963, with Jamhuri Day (Republic Day) following a year later.
As is happening in other former colonies, Madaraka Day passed quietly. Elsewhere, even Jamhuri Days are becoming rather less glamorous.
