Today, June 1, is a very important date on the national calendar, as it marks the 63rd anniversary of attaining internal self-rule from the British colonial administration. It is a historic opportunity for Kenyans to celebrate the culmination of the struggle for independence.

It was a great honour for Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to become the Prime Minister back then. Full independence as a republic came a year later, on December 12, 1964, and he became the country’s first President. In line with the rotation of the hosting of the national day fete in recent years, this is Wajir County’s big occasion. This is the first time the national celebrations led by President William Ruto are being hosted in the north-eastern region.

The rotation is not just for pride, but is also a means to boost regional development and foster national inclusivity. The theme of the celebration, ‘Education, Skills and the Future’, is a befitting choice. It focuses on skills development to shape the next generation. Businesses, schools, and government offices will remain closed to allow the nation to mark this milestone. There is no doubt that the six decades of independence have ushered in development. However, there have also been terrible failures and shortcomings.
