Kazakhstan's water agency, Kazvodhoz, held talks with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation on reducing agricultural water consumption and improving irrigation efficiency.
Discussions focused on digital water metering, telemetry systems, and technologies to reduce water losses in canals.
The U.S. agency also offered training and professional development programs for Kazakh water-management personnel.
Kazakhstan is turning to a US government agency for help on water conservation.Experts from the Kazakh water-management agency Kazvodhoz held talks recently with representatives of the US Bureau of Reclamation on ways to reduce water use in the agricultural sector, the Kazakh news outlet InBusiness.kz reported. The US Embassy in Astana facilitated the discussions."The parties paid particular attention to the implementation of digital water metering and telemetry systems within irrigation networks," Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Water Resources announced. "Another key topic of discussion was the implementation of technologies aimed at reducing water losses in canals.”Bureau personnel also expressed readiness to develop professional development programs for Kazvodkhoz staff.Follow-up talks are expected soon to work out programmatic details for water conservation initiatives and personnel training.Kazakhstan is projected to experience a shortfall of water of up to 50 percent of its needs for business and household use by 2040, according to UN Development Program estimates. The Bureau of Reclamation was established in 1902 to manage water resources in ways that promoted the settlement and economic development of 17 American states.
