England’s players are relying on the same wearable fitness trackers worn by Rory McIlroy, Patrick Mahomes and others as they try to maximise their recovery at the World Cup — and they will be wearing them during the matches. When England began their first training session at Palm Beach Gardens Tennis & Pickleball Center, Florida on Tuesday morning, the players and coaching staff were wearing Whoop bands.Worn on either the wrist, bicep or body, a Whoop band is effectively a 24/7 tracker that is designed to continually monitor a series of health metrics, including resting heart rate, heart rate variability and VO2 max.For England, who have worn other health trackers in the past, such as the Oura ring at Euro 2024, the idea is to gather as much data as possible on the players’ well-being and underlying fitness metrics. They are also going to be wearing them during their upcoming friendly matches against New Zealand (June 6) and Costa Rica (June 10), as well as during their World Cup fixtures. As Whoop is not an official sponsor of the England team, nor is it a commercial partner of the Football Association, it is up to the players as to whether they wear the fitness tracker during training and the upcoming matches.FIFA’s competition regulations state that “participating teams are allowed to use their own wearable tracking system” as long as it has “been tested and certified according to the Laws of the Game” and complies with their marketing and equipment regulations.Whoop, which is often worn by professional athletes on their biceps under a compression sleeve or on their bodies during competition, is compliant with FIFA’s regulations.England know that one of the key hurdles to winning a World Cup that involves more games than ever and plenty of travel is ensuring the players can recover efficiently.Head coach Thomas Tuchel has spoken at length about how getting acclimatised to playing in heat and humidity is going to be one of the biggest challenges they need to overcome this summer. On top of the heat, England’s players will be crossing multiple time zones during the group stage — they are playing in Dallas, Boston and New Jersey — and could end up playing in Mexico and Canada if they progress.Jun 3, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
