In a significant step towards decentralising specialised cardiac care, the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research is planning to launch weekly heart screening clinics in Chamarajanagar district and establish a satellite cardiac unit to improve access to treatment for rural patients.Announcing the proposal in Mysuru on Tuesday, Jayadeva Institute Director Dr. B. Dinesh said the initiative will be implemented in coordination with Chamarajanagar Medical College and the district administration. Under the proposed model, patients with suspected or diagnosed heart ailments will be screened every Monday or Wednesday, while those requiring advanced interventions will be referred to Mysuru for specialised treatment. The move comes amid growing concerns over the increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases, particularly among younger age groups. Dr. Dinesh attributed the trend to sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary habits, smoking, alcohol consumption and inadequate physical activity.Stressing the importance of preventive healthcare, he advised individuals above 40 years of age to undergo comprehensive health check-ups at least once a year. Those already diagnosed with cardiac conditions should undergo screening every three months to monitor their health and prevent complications, he said.Dr. Dinesh urged people to adopt healthier lifestyles by engaging in regular exercise and walking, consuming nutritious home-cooked meals rich in vegetables and pulses, and avoiding junk food and processed snacks.Highlighting the institute’s expansion plans across Karnataka, he said construction of a new 200-bed Jayadeva facility in Mysuru is expected to commence within a month. A 437-bed super-speciality cardiac hospital in Hubballi is also slated to be inaugurated in September this year. The institute is exploring the establishment of satellite cardiac units in Bengaluru’s Govindarajanagar and at Charaka Hospital as part of its broader strategy to strengthen cardiac healthcare services across the State.
