Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko has urged the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to execute the Tiruchi-Karaikudi four-lane project expeditiously. In a representation submitted to Harsh Malhotra, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, in New Delhi on Wednesday, Mr. Durai Vaiko said the project was of immense public importance for the districts of Tiruchi and Pudukottai. The proposed road over bridge across the level crossing at Karuveppilan Gate, which forms part of the project, would provide a permanent solution to the severe traffic congestion faced by people of Pudukottai for several decades.“I understand the project has already received approval from the National Planning Group in January 2026 and the design approval has also been granted,” Mr. Durai Vaiko said in the representation and called upon the Minister to direct the conduct of monthly review meetings until the commencement of the project. In another representation, Mr. Durai Vaiko urged the Minister to direct the National Highways Authority of India to verify the extent of land already acquired for widening the Tiruchi-Karur National Highways section in 2015 and take steps to widen it as a four-lane highway, especially on the narrow stretches where accidents are frequent. He observed that land owners who had provided their lands between Thiruparaithurai and Pettavaithalai had claimed that the acquired lands have not been utilised fully for more than a decade. The existing highway should be widened and improved with pedestrian crossings, subways, vehicular underpasses and lighting. Published - June 03, 2026 07:07 pm IST
