Unidentified persons broke into the house of an air-conditioner mechanic in Melur Town and decamped with 28 sovereigns of gold and ₹45,000 in cash on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) night.The police said that the family members of C. Saravanakumar, 40, who is employed abroad, were away at Singampunari in Sivaganga district to attend a temple festival on Tuesday.They locked their house in V.S. Nagar and left around 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday. When they returned home on Wednesday morning, they were shocked to find that the lock of the iron grille gate and door of the house on the first floor had been broken open.The burglars had also broken open an almirah, from where they stole the valuables.The police said that a CCTV camera installed in the vicinity had shown two bike-borne persons leaving the area at around 2.30 a.m.Forensic experts have collected fingerprints from the scene of the crime.The Melur police have registered a case, and further investigation is under way.
