New York police are investigating a string of strange late-night sightings involving groups of people entering and emerging from the city's vast sewer system through maintenance holes, leaving residents and authorities scratching their heads.
Security camera footage reviewed by police shows at least three separate incidents, according to several media reports.
In one case, the Associated Press reported that about seven people were seen climbing out of a maintenance hole at a busy intersection during the early hours of Friday morning (local time). Some wore headlamps and carried tools, including what appeared to be shovels, with one person narrowly avoiding being hit by a passing car as they emerged.
