Cogta MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi said while the most disruptive rainfall is expected in the Western and Eastern Cape, KZN will experience a noticeable drop in temperatures. Light snowfall is forecast over the Drakensberg mountain range on Thursday.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has called for heightened caution as an intense cut-off low pressure system currently affecting several provinces, bringing bitterly cold, wet and windy conditions to parts of the province this week.
Cogta MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi said while the most disruptive rainfall is expected in the Western and Eastern Cape, KZN will experience a noticeable drop in temperatures. Light snowfall is forecast over the Drakensberg mountain range on Thursday.
Authorities have reassured motorists that key transport routes remain open. COGTA said assessments indicate that snowfall is not expected to disrupt or close Van Reenen’s Pass on the N3 corridor, a major economic route. However, road users have been urged to maintain safe following distances, use headlights, and exercise caution due to wet and cold conditions.
Farmers in high-lying and Drakensberg-adjacent areas have been advised to shelter livestock and pets to protect them from the cold. Hikers and tourists have also been urged to postpone mountain trips due to rapidly changing and potentially hazardous conditions.
