The apex Christian body issued the grim ultimatum following a high-stakes National Church Denominational Leaders’ Summit held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Amid the horrific reality of escalating mass abductions of citizens across the country, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the President Bola Tinubu-led government to immediately declare a national state of emergency on security.

The apex Christian body issued the grim ultimatum following a high-stakes National Church Denominational Leaders’ Summit held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

In a communiqué issued at the end meeting themed "The State of the Nation and the Way Forward," the country's most powerful church leaders expressed absolute fury over worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and the total collapse of public confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions.

To force the government’s hand, CAN officially declared Friday, June 12, 2026, as the commencement of three days of national mourning, culminating on June 14, which has been designated as "Black Sunday" across all churches in Nigeria to honour the victims of the relentless violence.
