Former labor minister Effie Achtsioglou said Wednesday that her decision to leave the New Left party and resign her parliamentary seat was unrelated to former prime minister Alexis Tsipras’ recent launch of a new political party.
In her first interview since departing New Left alongside six other lawmakers, Achtsioglou said the split stemmed from strategic disagreements within the party.
“We left because the party leadership expresses a path that leads nowhere,” she told Mega TV. “That path focuses on preserving a political identity and tradition rather than achieving political change.”
Achtsioglou acknowledged that New Left had failed to gain broader public support despite what she described as a strong parliamentary presence.
“It is true that we failed to convince the public,” she said. “There was a strategic disagreement within the party that we were unable to bridge.”
