The New Left party will seize to be a separate parliamentary group, as seven of its lawmakers have announced their departure, which means their numbers will fall below the threshold of 10 MPs.

The news comes amid a rapid realignment of Greece’s fractured Left, which begun after the once dominant SYRIZA party suffered a crushing electoral defeat in 2023 and after former prime minister and former SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras announced his political comeback through a new party.

The lawmakers are former party president Alexis Charitsis, Effie Achtsioglou, Dimitris Tzanakopoulos, Nassos Iliopoulos, Hussein Zeybek, Theano Fotiou, and Meropi Tzoufi.

The move was announced in a press release co-signed with another 143 party members who quit the party.

The New Left will be left with only four MPs: Euclid Tsakalotos, Theodoros Dritsas, Sia Anagnostopoulou and Peti Perka.
