Perhaps all the talk of US EV sales crashing was a bit premature! Or perhaps Hyundai has just decided to buck the trend and go its own way. We’ll get much more insight in the coming month when we get more sales data, but, for now, we can say that Hyundai EV sales are booming.

The brand is now being led by the IONIQ 5, which had 5,002 sales in May. That’s a 28% increase over the 3,898 sale of May 2025. It’s still not close to being Hyundai’s best seller, well below models like the Santa Fe and even below the Kona, but that 28% growth only trailed the Sonata (+39%) and the also electric IONIQ 9 (+279%). So, there’s definitely hope for the model.

I thought the IONIQ 5’s sales increase was perhaps driven by Hyundai pulling the IONIQ 6 from the market. The IONIQ 6 had just 176 sales, an 85% drop from the 1,197 of May 2025. However, as noted above, the IONIQ 9 shot up the sales chart, going from 302 sales to 1,145, so it really counterbalanced the IONIQ 6’s drop. Overall, Hyundai’s EV sales clearly rose significantly.

We’ll see if Hyundai can keep up the EV growth in June and beyond. Things definitely looked good in May, though.
