The Visayas power grid is placed under yellow alert on Wednesday afternoon to evening due to thin power reserves resulting from forced outages and derated capacities of several plants.In an advisory, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the yellow alert is hoisted over the islands-cluster from 4 p.m. to 9 pm.READ: What does each power alert level mean?The Visayas grid is operating at an available capacity of 2,552 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,392 MW, while a total of 985.5 MW is unavailable to the grid.The grid operator said 10 plants are on forced outage in June 2026, nine plants have been on forced outage since May 2026, one plant since March 2026, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021, while nine plants are running on derated capacities.Factors that contributed to the yellow alert declaration are as follows:Unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, PEDC 3, and KSPC 2 High system demand forecastA yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.While supply is still enough to meet current demand, it no longer reaches the required safety margin.At this level, the possibility of rotational power interruptions increases. —VAL, GMA News
