President Donald Trump has endorsed California Assemblymember James Gallagher to fill the seat vacated by the death of GOP Rep. Doug LaMalfa. Republicans are hoping Gallagher can win a majority in this round so he can immediately reinforce the party’s narrow House margin and avoid an August 4 runoff. The special election is being held under the district’s current, Republican-leaning lines but it’s one of several Democrats redrew to be a pickup opportunity this November.
