Kiley maintains lead in close California Congressional District 6 race as vote count continues
Independent Rep. Kevin Kiley remained ahead of the field in California's 6th Congressional District race on Wednesday as ballots continue to be counted in the primary election. The latest unofficial results show Kiley is closely followed by Republican Michael Stansfield and Democrat Richard Pan.Kiley — who currently represents California's 3rd Congressional District, which was significantly impacted by the redrawn congressional map enacted under Proposition 50 — took to the stage at his election day watch party on Tuesday night to comment on his initial showing as votes came in."My friends, tonight, we have a chance to make history. Never before has an independent been elected to Congress in California," Kiley said. "And we have the first results of the primary, and I would say they are very encouraging."Kiley announced earlier this year he was leaving the Republican Party in favor of running as a no party preference candidate in the race for the newly redrawn congressional district. The congressman said the party switch was made to put partisanship aside as his focus will be to lower costs for Californians and improve public safety.
