More than 1000 teachers on Tuesday staged a mass protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa, Ikeja, demanding the immediate and safe release of schoolchildren, teachers and other victims abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The protesters, who converged on the Assembly complex carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, accused authorities of failing to adequately protect schools, teachers and communities from the growing threat of kidnappings and armed attacks.

Speaking to SaharaReporters during the demonstration, one of the protesters said the gathering was aimed at drawing urgent attention to the plight of the victims, many of whom have reportedly remained in captivity for weeks.

“Underway at the Lagos House of Assembly, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State, teachers, well over a thousand, are in protest over the abduction of teachers, students and others in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, demanding the immediate and safe release of the victims of banditry and government failure in the protection of lives and property,” the protester said.
