MANILA, Philippines — Impeachment trial should remain focused on uncovering the truth rather than becoming a highly technical legal battle, according to a constitutional law expert.

University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law Associate Dean and Assistant Professor Paolo Tamase on Tuesday warned against efforts to “over-judicialize” the proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

“The focus of impeachment has traditionally been the truth-telling aspect of it,” he told the Inquirer via a phone interview on Tuesday.

Tamase said he has concerns over portions of Duterte’s answer to the impeachment complaint, particularly arguments asking the Senate impeachment court to dismiss the case at an early stage.
