House prosecution panel spokesperson Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur said the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will serve as a crucial test of the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional accountability mechanisms amid mounting political tensions surrounding the proceedings.

“This is actually a litmus test for us that we can say this democracy still works,” Adiong said during the Saturday News Forum at Dapo Restaurant in Quezon City.

“And this is the perfect and democratic venue for both sides to air their complaints,” Alonto Adiong, chairman of the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, he added.

Duterte is accused of misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
