The police carried out surprise checks at warehouses of courier agencies and buses at Gandhipuram in Coimbatore early on Tuesday (June 2, 2026), aimed at curbing illegal transportation of drugs, banned tobacco products and other contraband substances.Armed with sniffer dogs from the dog squad, personnel from the Kattoor police station carried out surprise checks at mofussil bus stand, Thiruvalluvar bus stand (SETC bus stand) and omni bus stand at Gandhipuram. Luggage compartments of buses were checked thoroughly. Omni buses that reached the city from various destinations were checked on V.K.K. Menon Road. Warehouses of courier agencies, where parcels arrived from other cities on Tuesday, were also checked, police sources said.They said that the surprise checks were conducted in the wake of discussions held at a meeting chaired by the Minister of Prohibition and Excise K. Vignesh at Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday (June 1, 2026). The Minister is learnt to have instructed the district administration and the police to take effective measures to curb the flow of narcotics and prohibited tobacco products.
