The Coimbatore City Police on Friday, (July 3, 2026), destroyed over 271 kg of drugs seized in their jurisdictional limits. The police said that drugs seized in 140 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act were destroyed after obtaining the necessary orders from the competent court.The destroyed contraband substances included 270.172 kg of ganja, 334.48 grams of methamphetamine, 1.264 kg of cannabis-infused toffees, 39 mg of hashish, 157 nitrazepam tablets, 28 tramadol tablets, 4,810 tapentadol tablets and 173 alprazolam tablets.The drugs were incinerated at a biomedical waste treatment facility of Kovai Biowaste Management Private Limited on the outskirts of the city in the morning. City Police Commissioner N. Kannan and other officers carried out the destruction under the supervision of the Drug Disposal Committee in accordance with the provisions of the NDPS Act.A statement from the city police said sustained enforcement, investigation and public awareness initiatives will continue to curb drug trafficking and protect society, particularly the youth, from the menace of drug abuse.
