IT IS AN absolute pleasure and privilege to be part of this celebration of 50 years of Phoenix township. I was privileged to be part of this history from the very beginning. Neither I, nor the group of students and young professionals who came to work in Phoenix, were the ones who forged that history. It was the people of Phoenix – women, men, youth, religious and sports people and many others who made it what it became, and what it continues to represent.

Let me stat by saluting all of you present – all of you VIPs who made

Phoenix great! Many others have passed on, and a special tribute will be paid to them later in the programme. In particular, we remember JM Singh, Pravin Gordhan and Yunus Mahomed who, among others, made an immense contribution to building organisation in Phoenix.

My address is titled “Looking back, looking forward”. It’s important to recall how the Phoenix of today was built, reflect on what we achieved, understand what we can learn from those experiences, and look forward to the future.
