The Federation for People’s Rights (FPR) has urged the Puducherry Government to take immediate steps to expedite the resolution of cases it had filed in the Supreme Court appealing against the order of the Madras High Court that directed issuance of community certificates based on the mother’s caste.In a statement, G. Sugumaran, secretary of the Federation said the Madras High Court had ordered the issuance of certificates based on the mother’s caste in Puducherry at the commencement of the last academic year. The Puducherry Government had appealed against the order in the apex court. The cases have been pending in the Supreme Court for over a year.Further, the Puducherry Government also sought the opinion of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the issuance of community certificates based on the mother’s caste. The MHA, citing various Supreme Court judgments, had clearly advised that certificates should not be issued.The Federation said that a few individuals have obtained orders from the Madras High Court directing issuance of such community certificates. This has created anxiety among the local residents and raised concerns that persons from Tamil Nadu are undermining the opportunities of the locals.The Puducherry government should expedite the cases in the apex court and also halt the issuance of community certificates based on the mother’s caste, he said.
