SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won said during his visit to Taipei on Tuesday that SK hynix Inc. plans to increase its wafer production capacity twofold in the next five years.

Chey made the remarks to reporters while attending Computex, one of Asia's largest technology trade shows currently underway in Taiwan's largest city, saying that the memory bottle neck will likely continue on until 2030.

"It requires not only a lot of investments, but at least three years to build a new memory fab," Chey said. "Despite such challenges, we plan to double our production capacity of wafers over the next five years," he added.

The comments mark the first time Chey has made public SK hynix's future production plans.
