A driver had a narrow escape on Monday after his car hit a bear attempting to cross the road on Egnatia Highway, northern Greece, according to media reports.

The man, the deputy mayor of Deskati, a small town in the region of Grevena, was unharmed from the collision and was taken to the local health center as a precaution. His vehicle was seriously damaged.

It was unclear how badly the bear was injured. On Tuesday, environmental organizations were searching for the animal to determine its condition.

The accident is the latest of many road accidents involving bears that have occurred on highways and roads in rural Greece, as wild animals are increasingly entering urban areas in search of food.
