The Mizan News Agency, the media outlet affiliated with the judiciary of the Islamic Republic, announced today, Monday, June 1, that the death sentences of two defendants linked to the January protests in Tehran had been carried out.

According to the published report, “Mehrdad Mohammadinya” and “Ashkan Maleki” were executed on “charges” of participation in “setting fire to the Ja’fari Mosque” in Tehran’s Kuye Nasr neighborhood, destroying public property, blocking streets, and clashing with security forces.

State media outlets have labeled the two individuals as “leaders of the January coup,” a designation previously used by the Islamic Republic to describe anti-government protests and political defendants.

The published report states that the death sentences of these two individuals were carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court. Official media outlets also referenced CCTV footage and the “confessions” of the defendants.

Over the past four decades, the Islamic Republic has repeatedly relied on televised confessions and statements extracted from detainees in security-related cases, a process that has consistently drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations.
