VinFast just made its boldest move yet in the autonomous vehicle race. The Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer announced a strategic partnership with Nvidia and AI mobility firm Autobrains to develop Level 4 self-driving technology specifically designed for Southeast Asia’s notoriously complex roads.
The collaboration, revealed at Nvidia GTC Taipei on June 1, combines Nvidia’s DRIVE Hyperion 10 compute hardware with Autobrains’ Agentic AI software. The goal is not to build another luxury autonomous platform for wealthy Western markets, but to create something affordable enough to actually scale across a region where motorbikes, pedestrians, and cars compete for every inch of asphalt.
What Level 4 actually means, and why it matters here
Level 4 means the vehicle can handle all driving tasks in specific conditions without any human intervention. The driver doesn’t need to be ready to take over. It’s the level where robotaxis become genuinely viable.
VinFast’s Deputy CEO Duong Nguyen framed the ambition in democratizing terms.
