In July, 2024, the president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 ($51) for workers in Nigeria, from N30,000 ($21.88).

While the 133% rise from the previous minimum wage marks one of the highest salary hikes in the country's history, it fails to compensate for the sharp decrease in the purchasing power of Nigerians.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instead noted that the average citizen would need as high as N1 million for monthly expenditures.

The union presented its suggested figures after rejecting the proposed N100,000 national minimum wage, Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

This response from the group was issued following the announcement by AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF), that governors were deliberating on a revised national minimum wage of N100,000.
