In what has been a regular affair over the last three months, commercial LPG cylinder prices have yet again gone up in Bengaluru. The cost of a commercial LPG cylinder in Bengaluru has gone up by ₹46, and is priced ₹3,198. While a few hoteliers expressed relief, terming this hike as ‘nominal’, others said it was disappointing, but not surprising. They argued that while the latest hike may appear nominal, the previous hikes were so steep, particularly the last one of ₹993, that hotels are already absorbing the costs, especially as raw material prices are also rising. “Any hike below ₹100 is nominal. With the trend we were seeing, we were fearing another steep increase, but the latest one is fine. Such increases and decreases happen every month, and this may not burden the industry as such,” said P.C. Rao from the Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels’ Association. The hike announced on June 1 follows the all-time high increase of ₹993 announced on May 1. Before that, the Union Government had announced a hike of ₹115 on March 7, followed by another ₹202 on April 2. The overall increase has been ₹1,356 since March 7. Bharath R. Shetty, owner of a hotel at Majestic, said that while the latest hike is comparatively nominal, the shortage of cylinders is yet to be solved. Hoteliers are forced to procure cylinders by paying extra money, often as much as 50% over the price stated by the government. Moreover, the discounts that the government had withdrawn citing the West Asia crisis, while assuring that they would be reinstated after two months, are yet to be restored. The Union Government used to provide a discount of up to ₹150 on the MRP for bulk commercial LPG cylinder buyers. The discount was withdrawn in March. Krishna G., another hotelier, said that the price of palm oil and packaging materials have gone up by 40%, and continue to rise. He said that while the latest LPG price hike may be considered minimal, the overall impact is still not favourable for hoteliers, especially small-scale eateries.
