There is nothing better than a beautiful lawn, and it is really easy to keep grass healthy in hot weather as long as you do one task throughout June.11:28, 31 May 2026There's nothing quite like unwinding in a deckchair on a scorching day, but a sparse lawn that's lost its lush, green appearance can dampen the experience. Lawns frequently struggle during warm spells because high temperatures evaporate moisture in the soil faster, depriving grass roots of enough moisture to remain healthy. When this occurs, grass can become brown and dried out, making it far more challenging for the lawn to bounce back as temperatures climb as we head into summer. Lamara McBride from The Lawn Pack revealed that there's a straightforward gardening approach to help grass roots maintain hydration for longer periods: adjusting when you water your lawn. She said: "Timing matters. The best time to water your lawn is early morning. This allows water to soak into the soil before heat causes evaporation."Why water lawns in the morning?Gardeners frequently make the mistake of watering their lawns during the afternoon. By that point, watering is far less effective for keeping it hydrated, thus making it more prone to drying out.Afternoons are the warmest part of the day. The sun reaches its peak and the heat triggers water to evaporate before it can penetrate the soil. This means that barely any water will actually reach the roots, which increases the likelihood that they'll wither and leave the grass severely stressed as it battles to grow.Watering in the evenings after sunset isn't advisable. The water is unable to evaporate properly, which means it will simply remain on the grass throughout the night.Leaving plants damp for extended periods raises the risk of moss and fungal diseases, as well as establishing ideal conditions for pests like slugs to take up residence in your garden.Watering a lawn in the morning, when temperatures are lower but the sun is visible, allows more moisture to penetrate the soil and provides the grass sufficient time to dry after being soaked.Lawns watered at the optimal time will also cope better with rising temperatures as the afternoon approaches, and are less prone to becoming stressed. What time should you water a lawn? The ideal time to water a lawn is early morning between 6am and 10am. This allows the roots sufficient time to absorb as much water as possible before midday when the sun is at its strongest. However, if your lawn does turn brown at present, there's no need to panic — grass becomes dormant as a natural protective response during periods of drought.Article continues belowLate May to early June remains mild enough for lawns to bounce back, so watering the grass thoroughly every few days before 10am can help revive a vibrant, emerald-green lawn ahead of summer.
Lawns will stay healthy and green if gardeners do a simple task in June
There is nothing better than a beautiful lawn, and it is really easy to keep grass healthy in hot weather as long as you do one task throughout June.
Lawn expert Lamara McBride recommends watering grass between 6–10am, when moisture penetrates roots before midday evaporation kicks in. Afternoon sessions lose most water to heat; evening watering promotes moss and fungal disease — morning is the only effective window to maintain lawn health through summer.
