France's weather service predicted cooler temperatures on Sunday, marking the end of a record-breaking heatwave blamed for a number of deaths across Europe.

Much of the country would see levels hovering around the mid-20s, with only parts of southern France, including Marseille and Perpignan, rising above 30C on Sunday, Meteo-France forecasts showed.

Eastern parts of the country, including Strasbourg and Lyon, could also see stormy weather.

On Saturday, the weather service had warned of strong storms and said that "the arrival of a slightly cooler air mass" was expected to bring down temperatures on Saturday night.

France, Britain and Portugal have all recorded their hottest days ever for the month of May during the heatwave.
