The two most valuable AI companies on the planet just made the same bet at the same time. OpenAI and Anthropic have both rolled out multi-agent platforms designed to let enterprises automate complex workflows, essentially turning AI from a chat assistant into an autonomous workforce that can operate across phones, desktops, and internal systems.

The timing isn’t a coincidence. Both companies are positioning their agent platforms as the default infrastructure layer for enterprise automation, a market that could dwarf their current consumer-facing revenue streams.

What each company actually shipped

Anthropic launched Claude Managed Agents in public beta on April 8, 2026. The product lets enterprises define tasks, integrate tools, and deploy long-running agents without needing external orchestration frameworks. In plain English: companies can set up AI workers that handle multi-step processes, like onboarding a new employee or triaging engineering tickets, without stitching together a bunch of third-party tools to make it work.

By May 2026, Anthropic pushed its multi-agent orchestration capabilities into public beta alongside a novel feature called “dreaming.” The dreaming capability allows agents to learn and improve from previous interactions, essentially letting them get better at their jobs over time without explicit retraining.
