Politicians from Paris to Brussels are calling for a massive overhaul of the EU’s economic system – as if it weren’t already happening, under adverse conditions, and at a grassroots level

“If we want true independence, we must accelerate electrification,” is the slogan adopted by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday called for “collective mobilisation” towards the “great national objective of electrification”.

“Electrification is a contemporary battle,” he said in his televised address. All sectors, “from housing to transport, from electric vehicles to ports, from heavy industry to startups”, should do their part, the French politician asserted.

The E-word, that is to switch from burning things – usually fossil fuels – to electricity, will ultimately mean using the increasingly commonplace heat pump for houses, EVs to get to work, electrode boilers to pasteurise milk for human consumption, or 1800 °C arc light furnaces to melt steel.
