A Russian drone crashed into a residential building in Galați, southeastern Romania, during overnight attacks connected to strikes in Ukraine, triggering a fire, injuries, evacuations, and a sharp diplomatic escalation involving NATO and the European Union.
Remains of the drone that hit the building in Galati, indicating that it was a Russian "Geran-2":
The Romanian Foreign Ministry said the drone strike represents a serious breach of national airspace and international law. It added that Romania has already informed NATO allies and the Secretary General, requesting faster deployment of counter-drone systems to strengthen defenses along the eastern flank. “The Russian Federation continues to be an aggressor state, waging an illegal war with grave consequences for regional security and the safety of citizens,” the ministry said, adding that Bucharest will pursue stronger international pressure for a ceasefire.
According to Romanian authorities, the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m., when a drone involved in operations against Ukrainian infrastructure crossed into Romanian territory and struck a 10-story apartment building in Galați. The impact caused a fire on the roof, which spread toward upper floors. Officials said two people suffered minor injuries, while around 72 residents were evacuated and later accommodated elsewhere.
