A Russian drone struck a residential apartment building in the Romanian city of Galati during the night of May 28-29, injuring two people and triggering a fire, Romanian authorities said. The incident took place near the border with Ukraine during another large-scale Russian drone attack targeting Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas.

Romania’s Defense Ministry said the drone entered Romanian airspace and was tracked by radar before crashing into the roof of a residential block in the southern part of Galati. “One of these drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar to the southern part of the city of Galati and fell on the roof of a residential building, causing a fire,” the ministry stated.

Emergency authorities confirmed that the drone’s explosive payload detonated on impact, causing significant damage to the building. Around 70 residents were evacuated from the apartment block while firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The fire was later extinguished.

Two people suffered minor injuries, mainly abrasions and smoke exposure, and received medical treatment at the scene. Romanian media reported that fighter jets and a military helicopter had been placed on alert after drones were detected approaching Romanian airspace.
