Citing the ₹300 crore goods revenue generated during FY 2025–26 from major railway freight terminals and sidings within Coimbatore, including Irugur, Pilamedu and Coimbatore North, under Salem Division, rail enthusiasts have called for urgent steps for establishment of a Modern Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) in the district. The major contributors for the revenue include BPCL Siding, Irugur – ₹256.5 crore; CONCOR Private Freight Terminal, Irugur – ₹14.33 crore; Irugur Goods Revenue – ₹2.08 crore; Peelamedu and FCI Sidings – ₹1.61 crore; and Coimbatore North and FCI Siding – ₹68 lakh. These figures clearly highlight the growing importance of Coimbatore as a major logistics, freight and industrial hub of Western Tamil Nadu, J. Sathish, director, Kongu Global Forum, and formerly Member, Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee, Salem Railway Division, who had obtained these details from the Railways under RTI Act, said. With Coimbatore serving as one of the most industrialised regions in south India — supported by strong MSME, engineering, textile, pump, foundry and export sectors — the MMLP would pave way for building an integrated logistics ecosystem to drive growth, efficiency and global competitiveness, Mr. Sathish said. The MMLP in Coimbatore, which could be positioned as the economic gateway of Western Tamil Nadu, in Salem Division, which was the only division in Southern Railway without a seaport, would have as its key components rail freight terminals, container handling facilities, warehousing and cold storage, seamless road connectivity, inland container depots, and last-mile logistics infrastructure, Mr. Sathish explained, expressing certainty that such infrastructure will significantly reduce logistics costs, improve freight efficiency, strengthen exports, and attract investments, Published - May 29, 2026 11:50 pm IST
