Urging members from the trade and industry in Madurai to examine the modalities for establishing a dedicated logistics park, Income Tax Principal Commissioner T. Vasanthan on Thursday (January 1, 2026) said it would act as a lifeline for various industries in the region.

Speaking at the executive committee meeting of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry on New Year’s day, he said historic references from the Pandya regime and the Keeladi excavation suggest that Madurai had a trade network: both inland and in Southeast Asia, China, and Rome, among others.

There had been trade activities on textile, ivory, pearls, and other commodities. Such businesses and taxation was relevant even today. Hence, a dedicated logistics park in Madurai would throw open huge opportunities, and young minds could utilise it in the right way, he felt.

According to him, with the support of the Government of India, logistics business in a city like Madurai would be poised for tremendous growth. With the presence of a century-old Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the members should consider the idea and implement it.

The Chamber of Commerce, which has been playing the role of a catalyst and promoting best practices, should make “Pandian Madurai into a Modern Madurai”, he added.
