Helsinki supports decision-making on certain EU foreign policy issues by qualified majority voting (i.e. 80% of member-states), Finland Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen told Kathimerini in an interview during her visit to Athens this week.

Valtonen also referred to stray Ukrainian drones detected in Finnish airspace, calling the incident “extremely unfortunate.” However, she said cooperation with Ukraine on the issue had been “extremely good,” and that Helsinki has drawn important lessons from Kyiv on how to address such threats.

What did you discuss in Athens?

The war in Ukraine and the war in Iran and our efforts to open the Strait of Hormuz. Very essential bilateral ties. I met with representatives of Finnish enterprises but also local enterprises putting them together for innovation. So it is a great example of Finnish-Greek cooperation.

A stray Ukrainian naval drone was spotted recently in the Ionian Sea. Same in Finland some months ago. Of course, the source is Russian aggression in Ukraine. But how can all this can also be addressed with Kyiv?
